This city's first hospital, Baton Rouge General, has been providing for the healthcare needs of our community for more than 100 years. Our legacy is one of compassion and caring, innovation and leadership. Here are just a few of the milestones we've achieved:
- Performed the first open heart surgery in the city
- Created the first Diabetes Program
- Established the first Regional Burn Center in southern Louisiana
- Opened the first Chemical Dependency Unit in the state
More than 3,000 people work at our hospital, and every one of them is personally committed to making a difference to those they serve. It is this compassion, caring and attention to our patients' needs that sets the General apart from other hospitals.
As President and CEO, I'm especially proud of our nurses. They've earned the highest respect of doctors and sincere appreciation of patients. They've also won top honors for Baton Rouge General as Louisiana's Hospital of the Year for Nursing Excellence more times than any other hospital. And they're working hard to continue our longstanding tradition of superior nursing through the General's School of Nursing. In 2007, our nursing students ranked #1 in the U.S. for the national nursing licensing exam.
