Baton Rouge General Medical Center Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization whose primary purpose is to raise funds to support programs, education, services and research for the Foundation. The Foundation's Board of Governors is comprised of community volunteers. The Foundation raises funds for a variety of programs designed to improve the health of the Greater Baton Rouge community, with special emphasis on cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, burn, rehabilitative services, medical education and research. Contributions directly impact the quality of medical care provided to the community through the programs and services provided by the General.

Gifts of money or property made to the Foundation go the enhancement of current programs, the establishment of new programs or for the purchase of equipment, services, or goods. Administrative costs of the Foundation are paid for by General Health System. One hundred percent of all donations received go to support projects. The Foundation does not provide funding to outside organizations or individuals.

The Foundation has a number of giving options:

  • Patrons of Health is our annual membership giving program. Levels of giving begin at $50.00 and donors who contribute $500.00 annually are recognized on the Donor Wall at Bluebonnet. All Patrons of Health members are recognized in Foundation Focus, a quarterly publication of the Foundation.
  • A Gift of Tribute is a meaningful way to remember a loved one. Giving or receiving such a gift to a charitable organization touches people in a totally different way than a material gift and is increasingly being used to remember family members and friends. These gifts can be given "in Honor of or "in Memory of our loved ones.
  • The Lullaby Baby program was created to give families and friends a way to celebrate a child's birth. Upon becoming a member of the program, the baby's footprint will be etched in pink or blue on a satin medallion, along with their complete name and birth date. To perpetuate the honor, the medallion is permanently displayed on the recognition wall located in the Birth Center's family waiting area.
  • The Stars of the General is an exclusive group of individuals who promote life, health and hope of a rare and valuable legacy. Members are major benefactors who, through their generosity, have contributed a minimum of $10,000.00.
  • The Circle of Care Society consists of donors who have made deferred gifts of significant assets to the Foundation. These gifts fund the future of our organization. They can be gifts of cash, appreciated stock or property or other assets. Remarkable legacies are often inspired when people choose to perpetuate the values that have shaped their lives with a charitable bequest a means of affording ongoing support to chosen charitable causes. Such a legacy, established through a will, provides for future generations to benefit from gifts left by ordinary people with extraordinary generosity.

Many of our donors have begun their Legacy through endowments. Donors to the Foundation realize that The General's strength in the future depends on building a foundation through endowments today. As federal and state funding shrinks and the cost of healthcare rises, community support becomes critical to the hospital's growth and ability to maintain its standards of excellence and service to the entire community. An endowed gift is a gift that the Foundation holds in perpetuity. The gift is invested and only a portion of its average annual investment return is used for purposes specified by the donor.

The Foundation holds three annual events. The primary purpose of the events is to raise additional funds and develop friends in the community.
  • The major event each year is the Excellence In General Celebration. This event is held in October each year and a person or family in the community is recognized for Excellence In General. In addition, we honor our Hospital Volunteer of the Year. The event produces a net profit of approximately $125,000.00.
  • In February, we hold the Father/Daughter Sweetheart Dance. The event provides an opportunity for Dads and daughters to create special memories that will last a lifetime. Since February is National Heart Month, proceeds from the event usually go to purchase equipment for the cardiovascular program.
  • In August, we host the Mother/Son Build me a Son event. The event provides an opportunity for Moms and sons to create special memories, build friends for our organization and raise funds.

We thank the many volunteers who worked diligently on projects to enhance contributions to the Foundation. These dollars are used for services, programs, education and equipment for our hospitals. This is our community and it's up to each of us to make sure it continues to flourish and provide services to all citizens.
